How to Make a Window Mask to Help the Hearing Impaired and Deaf, ASL, Speech, Teachers, Lip Readers

3D Window Mask Modified by Kaylen Wells Cirillo June 2020 Templates are here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Z6JhsaYBo0A5gH4gygXW21iqOde3556J?usp=sharing There are lots of pattern adaptations for a window mask online with video tutorials demonstrating how to make a window and how to sew these types of face coverings. I’m currently using this technique and template I’ve made and offer a few tips on choosing a mask like this. Make sure there is enough cloth to vinyl ratio for easy breathing. Too much vinyl makes it harder to breathe. I use 100% Quilting Cotton and either 8 or 12 gauge vinyl. You can keep them from fogging by rubbing a dab of dish soap over the inside of the vinyl and wiping it away. There are other options that work as well. Check to see if the mask you choose has vinyl sitting on the nose or chin. It is uncomfortable to have the vinyl resting on the skin for long periods of time. Choose fabric based on reasons for use. Some will want fun patterns and just want their smile to be seen. Some will need neutral and contrasting solid colors so their facial expressions can be understood. I am a novice. I’ve been learning as I go. This adaptation is based on patterns offered for free so I am sharing mine for free, too. Please don’t sell this pattern/template. If you want to share it, that is great! There is a lot of need for these window masks right now. This mask is designed to be lower under the eyes and to be convertible for the wearer to use ear loops, elastic around the head, or ties. The enclosed templates are for a small/medium adult, and a medium/large adult. I will upload the child size I use next. Size is based on facial features, not necessarily weight! It is the length from the top of the nose to under the chin. Most people between 5.5 - 7” can wear the medium large. For an adult closer to 5”, I’d use the small/medium adult. The child size fits under 4.5 inches. I don’t change the window size for larger sizes, but I do scale the window down for children to create that better cotton to vinyl ratio. If an even larger size is needed, try scaling up the pattern area under the eyes by ⅛ of an inch and ¼” under the chin.
